Chernobyl Children International launches €15 million campaign
Irish-based charity Chernobyl Children International (CCI) has launched a fundraising campaign to raise €15 million. The campaign comes on the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster and the 20th anniversary of the founding of CCI. The occasion was marked by a special event this week in Dublin with the Irish prime minister and Foreign Minister.
The new fundraising campaign is designed to fund the construction of 20 new foster homes in Belarus, 50 cardiac doctor missions, and the opening of a new daycare centre to help up to 60,000 rural Belarusians.
CCI founder Adi Roche told the Irish Times that 98 per cent of their funding is from the public and this campaign will also depend on lots of small amounts from the public. Less than two years ago the charity said that it was in financial difficulty with a potential €500,000 shortfall in its annual budget of €2.5 million.
