Ireland drops out of top 10 countries donating money
Ireland ranks 8th in the CAF World Giving Index, according to the latest edition of the index published recently, but has dropped out of the top 10 countries for donating money for the first time.
The CAF World Giving Index looks at how and why people around the world give to charity. In the eighth edition of the CAF World Giving Index, data has been collected from 139 countries.
The report includes questions about three different types of giving behaviour, with each country ranked according to their answers to helping a stranger, donating money and volunteering time. The latest data presents giving data from across the globe over a five year period (2012-2016).

According to the Index 61% of people in Ireland help a stranger, 60% donate money and 39% volunteer time to a good cause. Over the five year average of the Index Ireland sits in 5th place and shows an average donation level of 67%.
Ireland, however, drops out of the top 10 countries for donating money for the first time, recording a donation rate of 60%, down from 66% in 2015. Based on the five year average Ireland’s position in the Index has declined by 3%.
The CAF World Giving Index shows that there has been a global decrease in giving since the last report. This follows a high point recorded by last year’s Index, in particular for helping a stranger. The proportion of people across the world who reported donating money in 2016 was the lowest seen for three years.
For the fourth year in a row, Myanmar is ranked first in the CAF World Giving Index. Its average score over the past five years is also the highest of all countries surveyed.
