Virgin Money Giving raises £10m in first six months

Online donations service Virgin Money Giving has raised over £10 million for charity in the six months since it launched on 14 October 2009.
Virginmoneygiving.com is the official sponsorship website of last weekend’s Virgin London Marathon, together with the Royal Parks Half Marathon and Sony ‘Run to the Beat’. The site was used by 437 fundraising teams running together, as well as by individual runners. A popular donation was £1 per mile, or a total of £26.20, selected by over 13,000 people. That alone generated £340,600, or £429,854.50 with Gift Aid added.
Unlike other online fundraising services, Virgin Money Giving (virginmoneygiving.com) is a not-for-profit business. That means its fees to charities are as low as possible so more money reaches good causes.
Jo Barnett, Executive Director at Virgin Money Giving, which operates on a not-for-profit business model said: “We launched Virgin Money Giving as a result of Virgin Money’s London Marathon sponsorship. We realised there was a better, more efficient way for people to raise money online with a not-for-profit business model which is unique in online fundraising”. The company estimates that its not-for-profit approach “means over £500,000 extra has already reached charities compared to if the money was donated through other leading online fundraising services”.
