Carers Trust appoints Kirsty McHugh as new CEO
Carers Trust has appointed the current CEO of the Mayor’s Fund for London, Kirsty McHugh, as its next CEO, taking up the role in February. Before her current role, she led the Employment Related Services Association. In addition, McHugh has served as a director at Business in the Community, where she led community programmes across England and Wales. She is a non executive director of Gateway Housing Association in East London and has served as a panel member for the National Lottery’s Building Better Opportunities Fund. She also has first-hand experience of what it means to be an unpaid carer. She has cared for a close family member approaching end of life, and for another with a long-term disability.

Four new trustees for GambleAware
GambleAware has appointed four new trustees to its Board. The appointments focus on building public health, governance and commissioning expertise to guide the delivery of the charity’s five-year organisational strategy and its vision of a society safe from gambling harm. The new trustees are Baroness Hilary Armstrong, Labour member of the House of Lords, Marina Gibbs, Policy Director within Ofcom’s Networks and Communications group who currently oversees Ofcom’s work in the postal sector and directs policy projects across Ofcom’s regulatory sectors, Mubin Haq, Chief Executive of Standard Life Foundation, and Dr. Koravangattu Valsraj (pictured), a consultant psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Senior Clinical Lecturer at Kings College London.
Raft of appointments announced at Plan International UK
Plan International UK has appointed Tsungai Mahumucha (pictured) as its new Director of International Programmes, and John Lockett as its new Director of Finance and Resources. The charity has also announced three new trustees: Girish Menon, CEO of STiR Education UK and former CEO of ActionAid UK; Salma Nims, the Secretary-General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women; and Hope Mbuthi, a 22-year-old activist, student and youth talk show host from Kenya (quotes and photos available).Tsungai joins the organisation from Plan International’s Zimbabwe office, where she worked for 10 years in various roles, most recently as Head of Programmes. In 2020, she was seconded to Plan International Zambia, where she was Interim Head of Programmes and Interim Country Director.
Mat Cottle-Shaw joins Bone Cancer Research Trust as CEO
The Bone Cancer Research Trust has announced Mat Cottle-Shaw as its new CEO. With over 15 years’ experience working in the charity sector, Cottle-Shaw has headed the Fundraising & Communications Teams at the Bone Cancer Research Trust since 2015. He also has a very personal link with the cause – his father was diagnosed with the illness and given 6 months to live when he was 23, and also told he would struggle to have children due to the treatment. However, 7 years into his treatment, Mat Cottle-Shaw was born, and whilst enduring multiple operations and countless rounds of chemotherapy, his dad survived another 10 years before passing away.
Ruth Whatling joins Homeless Network Scotland
Ruth Whatling has joined Homeless Network Scotland in the role of Head of Policy & Equality, a newly created post that speaks to a growing awareness and importance placed on equality considerations in ending homelessness in Scotland. She joins Homelessness Network Scotland on a two-year secondment from the Scottish Government’s Homelessness Team and with two decades of public sector experience including equality, policy and public administration roles in the Civil Service.
Lord Dr Michael Hastings of Scarisbrick CBE joins UKCF as President
UK Community Foundations (UKCF) has appointed Lord Dr Michael Hastings of Scarisbrick CBE as President, with immediate effect. With over 20 years’ experience, his previous roles have seen him hold the title of Head of Public Affairs at the BBC, as well as being the BBC’s first Head of Corporate Social Responsibility. As President of UKCF, Lord Hastings will be an advocate and ambassador for the work of UKCF and the community foundation network, and a sounding board for the UKCF Chair and Chief Executive on all matters of good governance and organisational culture, especially equity, diversity and inclusion.
CRUK appoints Luke Robinson as Director of Communications
Cancer Research UK has appointed Luke Robinson as Director of Communications, further strengthening its senior leadership team. In his new role, which reports to Dr Ian Walker, executive director of policy, information & communications, Robinson will oversee strategic communications, the development of thought leadership and Cancer Research UK’s internal and external communications functions. He joins the charity from the Ministry of Justice, where he oversees the department’s strategic communications, campaigns, external affairs, digital and insight & evaluation teams.
Two new trustees for Penny Brohn UK
Penny Brohn UK has announced the appointment of two new members to its Board of Trustees. The appointees are Dr Penny Kechagioglou (pictured), consultant clinical oncologist, and Jon Green, former NHS hospital chief executive and operational director. The pair join at a critical time for the charity and will be helping to steer its strategy and governance as it pursues its ambition to make sure every person with cancer in the UK is able to access and experience the best of integrative cancer care, leading to better outcomes and quality of life.
