MP concerned about companies diverting gifts to tsunami appeal

Tom Harris, MP for Glasgow Cathcart, plans to raise the issue of companies that renege on existing pledges to charities in order to donate to the tsunami appeal in the House of Commons.

According to Third Sector magazine, Mr Harris is asking charities to let him know if they come across any examples of companies who cancel pledged donations in order to make a more high-profile gift to the tsunami appeal.

He is particularly concerned that companies should not benefit from publicity for giving to the tsunami appeal if they have simply given with one hand while taking from another charity with the other.

He has already written to 25 UK companies asking them to confirm that their well-publicised gifts to the tsunami appeal were new money.

He would welcome news of such ‘recycling’ of corporate donations.
