Water agency asks people to donate a £1 when they spend a penny

To mark World Toilet Day today, Northern Ireland Water and their nominated charity, WaterAid, are encouraging the public to ‘spend a penny’ and give a pound to improve sanitation in developing countries.
The NI Water campaign is asking people to consider donating a pound online every time they think of going to the toilet. To back up their campaign they have come up with some interesting facts around toilet use. On average, people in the UK visit the toilet 11 times every day*, using facilities that are normally of a basic standard. However, for over 2.5 billion people living in developing countries, the need to go to the toilet can result in a completely different experience. These individuals normally have to walk several miles to find somewhere private, dig a hole or squat in the road.
Frank Stewart, WaterAid’s honorary secretary and NI Water employee explains how funds raised can save lives:
“Through fundraising, WaterAid helps communities build clean, hygienic toilet facilities. Improving sanitation not only improves health, but also people’s dignity and livelihoods. The charity also provides water facilities to improve access to clean drinking water and teaches people about ways in which they can limit the spread of disease.”
