Howard Lake | 6 September 2007 | News

Railway Children, the charity that works to prevent the abuse of children on the streets both in the UK and overseas, today launches an appeal aimed at the rail industry and the organisations and people working in it.

The Railway Children Platform Appeal is being launched at London’s St Pancras station where the Rail Link Engineering consortium is celebrating the delivery of High Speed 1, the UK’s first high-speed rail link.

The charity aims to raise £2.5 million from the appeal over the next three years.

The charity has already secured industry backing for the appeal: Platform Appeal’s Committee Chairman is Gary Sanford, Director of Railway Strategy at Omnicom Engineering, and the 15 appeal committee members represent sectors across the railway industry. Railway Children’s founder and chairman, David Maidment, a former controller of Safety Policy with Railtrack, spoke at today’s event.

Since its foundation 12 years ago, Railway Children has received considerable support from the railway and engineering sectors. The Platform Appeal will include imaginative fundraising incentives with the aim of reach out towards all rail employees, from the station kiosk to the boardroom.

Gary Sanford, Chairman of the Platform Appeal Committee, said: “How fitting it is at an occasion like this when we are celebrating excellence and achievement that we set ourselves another goal: a goal that was started by one of us and which – if we all pull together – can make a difference to the lives of thousands of children in India whose only world is grinding poverty and a life on the streets”.
