VSO & Tennis2Be win NCVO photography competition
Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and Tennis2Be have won NCVO’s annual voluntary sector photography competition.
The NCVO competition, sponsored by Pureprint and now in its seventh year, celebrates the work of charities across England, and challenged NCVO members to submit entries demonstrating the difference their organisation makes.
Entries were judged in two categories, one for staff, volunteers and service users of charities, and one for professional photographers. Andrew Aitchison won the professional category for VSO (main image) with his image of a paediatrician nurse volunteering with a newborn in Tanzania. Sophie Grant won the open category for Tennis2Be with her photograph of young girls from the Bengali community taking part in a tennis programme.
Francis Augusto was runner-up in the professional category with his picture of a gymnastics class in action at one of London Youth’s community centres. Julie Lankshear, from Caring Canines, was runner up in the open category for her portrait of a young boy and a dog at one of the project’s dog-assisted therapy groups.
Shortlisted and winning images were exhibited at NCVO’s Annual Conference on 20th April. Prizes awarded include tickets to NCVO’s Annual Conference, Samsung tablets and £500 of credit for the winning charities to have their work professionally printed by Pureprint.
The competition received over 80 entries, and the winners were picked by a judging panel comprised of Peter Kellner, chair of NCVO, Giselle Green, media coordinator for Constructive Voices, and Daniel Regan, award winning professional photographer and winner of NCVO’s 2016 photography competition.
Peter Kellner, chair of NCVO, said:
“NCVO’s photo competition celebrates the charities up and down the UK who work every day on making a difference. The work of the charity sector is so diverse, and that was reflected in the great range of entries we received from organisations eager to demonstrate the difference their hard work makes in their communities. In newspapers, it is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. The wonderful entries to our competition show that, in our world, each picture represents a thousand inspiring deeds.”
