Phil Hope, MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire, has been appointed Minister for the Third Sector in the Cabinet Office. He succeeds Ed Miliband who was promoted to Cabinet Office Minister by new Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Announcing his appointment on his website, he said that his role is to “promote the sector, to strengthen community action, improve public services and create a thriving culture of social enterprise.”

He added: “The third sector – voluntary groups, charities and social enterprises – plays a critical role alongside the public and private sectors to build economic success, create social justice and develop stronger communities.

“Having worked in the third sector for many years before entering Parliament and chaired the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Voluntary Sector when first elected, I hope I can bring firsthand experience to the job of promoting voluntary and community groups and creating successful social enterprises.”

Hope worked previously as Parliamentary Private Secretary to John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, and for Nick Raynsford as Minister of State for Housing and Planning.
