CAF has published a new survey that highlights some fundamental differences in the way countries approach giving to charity.
International Comparisons of Charitable Giving looks at individual philanthropy in 12 countries including the UK, US, France and Germany, where comparable data was available.
It reveals that where tax and social insurance contributions are high, giving is a relatively lower prportion of GDP, for example in France, Turkey and the Netherlands. In the UK and Republic of Ireland, however, where personal taxation is lower, levels of giving are higher.

However, because a nation is wealthy, it will not necessarily produce high national giving. The Netherlands and France, which have high average incomes show giving as a percentage of GDP as among the lowest of the countries surveyed. The opposite is true in South African and Australia.
