Runners who took part in the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon at the weekend have already raised £23 million, and the final total is expected to reach £25 million.

The current total of £23 million, which includes Gift Aid, is a record on the fundraising site for the London Marathon. It is a 12% increase on this time last year.

Contrasting its not-for-profit model with that of JustGiving, Virgin Money Giving claims that, as a result of its lower fees, “charities will be better off by around £700,000 as a result of their fundraisers using Virgin Money Giving”.

It adds that 81% of the fundraisers it surveyed this month (it received 389 responses) think it is important that online fundraising sites are run on a not-for-profit basis. Furthermore, 43% think that any charge made should just be enough to cover operating costs.

Jo Barnett, Executive Director at Virgin Money Giving said:

“I am delighted that Virgin Money Giving has smashed all previous fundraising totals for those taking part in the Virgin Money London Marathon. We expect the Virgin Money London Marathon to break yet another fundraising World record this year.

The sheer effort and generosity of those taking part to raise funds for the cause of their choice, no matter how large or small, should never be underestimated. More and more people are signing up to Virgin Money Giving as they realise more money goes to their charity because of our not-for-profit approach.”

Launched in 2009, Virgin Money Giving has handled over £420 million for charities as of the end of 2015. More than 10,000 charities are registered with the platform.
