London Marathon runners raise £23m so far via Virgin Money Giving

Runners who took part in the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon at the weekend have already raised £23 million, and the final total is expected to reach £25 million.
The current total of £23 million, which includes Gift Aid, is a record on the fundraising site for the London Marathon. It is a 12% increase on this time last year.
Contrasting its not-for-profit model with that of JustGiving, Virgin Money Giving claims that, as a result of its lower fees, “charities will be better off by around £700,000 as a result of their fundraisers using Virgin Money Giving”.

It adds that 81% of the fundraisers it surveyed this month (it received 389 responses) think it is important that online fundraising sites are run on a not-for-profit basis. Furthermore, 43% think that any charge made should just be enough to cover operating costs.

Launched in 2009, Virgin Money Giving has handled over £420 million for charities as of the end of 2015. More than 10,000 charities are registered with the platform.
