Boris Johnson contributes cheese on toast recipe to charity cook book
A celebrity cookbook has been published to raise funds for the Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity. It features contributions from Pippa Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow and One Direction, and Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who shares his recipe for cheese on toast.
The Morning Sunshine cookery book is available in Clintons stores across the UK. The Rays of Sunshine charity which will benefit from the proceeds grants wishes for children suffering from serious illness.
Cheese on toast
Johnson departs from the traditional recipe by adding a layer of chutney beneath the cheese. His recipe for cheese on toast is:

- Cut a large amount of cheese, preferably cheddar, into slabs
- Lightly toast some brown bread
- Spread toast with butter and chutney
- Cover toast with slabs of cheese
- Grill until it gets all nice and scabby.
Other celebrities and their recipes
The book also features chef Gordon Ramsey‘s recipe for Pan Fried Egg with Aubergine Caponata and Anchovy Dressing, and Lorraine Pascal’s Aussie Sweetcorn Breakfast Fritters with Avocado and Rocket Salad and Sweet Chilli Jam.
The Morning Sunshine book also includes a recipe from Gwyneth Paltrow for blueberry muffins, Pippa Middleton‘s full English frittata, and Kate Moss‘ French toast with crispy bacon and maple syrup. There are also recipes from chefs including Jamie Oliver, Gary Rhodes and Gino D’Acampo.
The celebrity support for the book derives from the celebrity ambassadors that it has managed to attract. These include Simon Cowell, One Direction, JLS and Gordon Ramsey.
Tim Fairs, director at Clintons, said:
“As well as helping to raise money for charity, these recipes give an insight into the lives of celebrities as they reveal the type of food they like to cook at home. Who would have guessed that Boris Johnson was such a fan of cheese on toast or that One Direction love to eat burritos for breakfast?”
The perfect cheese on toast
In 2013, the Royal Society of Chemistry produced a formula for the perfect cheese on toast, suggesting that 50g of sliced cheese should be placed on a slice of medium sliced white bread and grilled at 115° for four minutes with a distance of 18cm between the toast and the grill. They didn’t mention chutney.
