Homelessness Transition Fund awards grants of up to £150k each
Local communities awarded grants of up to £150k each to help prevent rough sleeping and get individuals off the streets.
Research has shown that round half of rough sleepers don’t seek help before they arrive on the street. Many of these people are simply not aware of the support that is available to them and the longer someone spends on the streets, the more complex their problems can become.
This problem can be alleviated by charities and councils working together to ensure the right services are in place for those who find themselves facing homelessness.

These grants, which total £3.5 million, come from the £20 million Homelessness Transition Fund which is administered by the umbrella charity Homeless Link and funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Over 2,300 people are estimated to be sleeping rough on any one night in England. The fund was set up to support the Government’s rough sleeping strategy ‘Vision to end rough sleeping: No Second Night Out nationwide’. To date the fund has given grants to charities and voluntary groups that have assisted over 14,500 people across England.
This final round of funding has been awarded to a diverse range of projects that are taking an innovative approach to supporting some of society’s most vulnerable people out of homelessness.
Housing Minister Kris Hopkins said:
“I am absolutely clear that homelessness has no place in the 21st century and I am determined that every effort is made to prevent and tackle rough sleeping and get more support to vulnerable people in need.
“That’s why I’m pleased to see 30 projects benefit from a share of £3.5 million to continue their good work and help people find stable homes and jobs and get their lives back on track.
“This takes the total Homelessness Transition Fund to £20 million, which has already helped over 14,000 people facing the prospect of sleeping rough. Today’s funding – on top of the £470 million we’ve given councils to help tackle this issue – should help ensure no one spends more than one night on the streets.”
Commenting, Sharon Allen, Chair of the Fund’s Grants Panel said:
“We know how damaging spending a night on the streets is to an individual’s wellbeing. The grants we have awarded so far have helped thousands of people in communities across England to escape homelessness and move towards independence.
“The 30 projects chosen for this final round will continue this good work and ensure that individuals who find themselves without a home can be supported to get their lives back on track.”
The money will help fund a range of services including accommodation, health, employment advice and additional outreach workers to connect rough sleepers to practical help and longer term support.
With winter on the way, the public are also being urged to play their part by calling StreetLink on 0300 500 0914 or visiting www.streetlink.org.uk whenever they are concerned that someone is sleeping rough in Bradford. StreetLink will then pass on this information to local services.
