Henry Smith Charity director on hospice funding

Howard Lake | 8 March 2005 | News

The director of the Henry Smith Charity told delegates at a recent workshop that the trust finds funding hospices ‘difficult’.

Speaking at a recent Midas workshop, Richard Hopgood, director of major grant-maker the
Henry Smith Charity, said that the trust finds funding hospices difficult for two reasons. First, there are many hospices, and secondly, it feels that hospices’ local communities should be the basis of hospice support.

That said, the Henry Smith Charity does occasionally make grants to hospices, either where a hospice has special difficulty, such as a very poor area, or if it is engaged in a particularly innovative project.

The Henry Smith Charity gives away 10% of its budget to hospices and palliative care, resulting in donations of around £2 million a year.

Mr Hopgood reported a substantially increased number of applications to the trust.

His staff also manage Trusthouse Trust, a smaller trust with average grants of £3,000 and a top of £50,000.
