UK Radio Aid has been established by the leading commercial radio stations to host a 12-hour combined broadcast on 17 January 2005 to raise funds for the tsunami disaster appeal.

In an unprecented collaboration, 268 national and regional radio networks with a combined audience of 30 million listeners, will link up on Monday 17 January for a one-off 12-hour broadcast tsunami fundraising appeal. The money raised will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Tsunami Earthquake appeal.

Fronted by presenter Chris Evans from Capital Radio’s London headquarters, the event has been put together within five days.

The fundraising activities are being lead by the Radio Advertising Bureau. It has already secured £500,000 of sponsorship for the event, plus £100,000 in prizes. Participating networks have already pledged £250,000, one day’s profits.

Celebrities and politicians, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, are expected to take part, and the 06.00 – 18.00 show will feature live performances by various artists.

Organisers are asking listeners to donate one hour of their salary to the appeal or get involved by organising a fundraising events. Viewers can donate by phone, online, texting by mobile phone, post, at high street banks, and it is hoped via payroll giving. Online auctions at eBay will also raise funds.

Online donations are being handled at the DEC’s site and processed by British Telecom using a UK Radio Aid-branded version of the standard DEC online donation page.
