Red Cross launches emergency appeal for South Asian quake victims
The British Red Cross is the first agency to have launched an emergency appeal in response to the widespread flooding caused by a massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra earlier today.
The British Red Cross appeal will help fund emergency supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, cooking utensils and water purification tablets.
The charity will also later fund rehabilitation work.

Paul Anticoni, British Red Cross head of international aid, said: “This is clearly a massive disaster, made all the more difficult because it has hit so many countries.”
As at 16.00 today there was no evidence of other online emergency appeals for this disaster, although others are expected to be announced in the next day.
Although there was front page coverage of the appeal on the British Red Cross’s Web site, there was no specific section about the flood/earthquake appeal on the charity’s donate online page. It is always possible, however, to donate there to the charity’s generic disaster fund and to its work worldwide, so these would cover today’s appeal.
