Event to examine Open Source solutions for voluntary sector

The potential that Open Source solutions and methodologies have for the voluntary and community sector is being examined at an event in London next week.
The event, on 15 September 2004, aims to bring together organisations who may have heard of Open Source, but have no direct experience of it, and those keen to support its implementation.
Its organisers say such an event has not been held before in the UK. It will showcase a range of initiatives across the voluntary sector. The theme, an idea endorsed by UK Fundraising, is that Open Source software, which is developed voluntarily by a community of programmers, has a huge potential for social application.

The event has been organised by a group of volunteers all working in the London Voluntary and Community Sector, and is supported by London Advice Services Alliance (LASA) and by ICT consultancies Jamkit, JADe Group and Xdevelopment.
The day will be split between timetabled, themed sessions, giving details of projects already using Open Source, and free time for discussion and hands-on demonstrations of Open Source systems.
The event takes place at City Temple Conference Centre from 09:30 – 17.00. The fee is £5 for individuals and £25 for those representing their organisation.
