Howard Lake | 5 April 2004 | News

Charities in Sheffield will be the first in the country to benefit from the new Community Programme of personal financial services company Abbey.

Over the next two months, Abbey will be donating up to £100,000 to charities in and around the Sheffield area whose applications fit with Abbey’s new charitable priorities.

The grants are part of Abbey’s programme to promote its new Charitable Trust priorities, which have been changed to reflect the new direction of the bank, formerly Abbey National. The new priorities are to support disadvantaged people through:

Abbey is encouraging applications for funding of £5,000 and over before 29 May 2004. Decisions on applications will be taken in June.

The grants scheme is in addition to Abbey’s existing or planned funding in that area. Charities in the regions where Abbey is running the £100,000 funding programme are not precluded from applying for other donations from Abbey’s Charitable Trust throughout the year.

Sheffield will not be the only area to benefit. Abbey will replicate the grants programme by supporting different areas of the UK over the course of the next few years.
