Moorfields Eye Hospital's capital appeal raises over £10 million

Moorfields Eye Hospital in London has raised over £10 million to build an International Children’s Eye Centre.

The capital appeal is the hospital’s first major fundraising effort in 50 years. Its success means that the new facility will be
entirely funded through private donors.

Ian Balmer, Chief Executive of Moorfields, said: “The fundraising strategy we adopted was very deliberate to ensure we secured all the big gifts before we launched the appeal publicly and we’ve been successful at raising two-thirds of our target from less than 15 donors.”

Organising the capital appeal began in 2000. Significant corporate support has been provided by the Telegraph Group, through its annual Christmas Readers’ Appeal which raised near £250,000, and £156,000 from Cable & Wireless.

Of the top 15 donors to Moorfields, the average time from first point of contact to securing a pledge was just over 11 months: the shortest time taken was 6months and the longest was 18 months.

The appeal was directed for Moorfields by John Sullivan, principal partner of health fundraising consultants Main Street health.
