Blackwell's choose National Literacy Trust as charity of the year

Howard Lake | 18 November 2003 | News

The National Literacy Trust has been selected by publisher Blackwell’s as its charity of the year, as it moves into its 125th anniversary year in 2004.

Blackwell’s has pledged to raise £125,000 for the National Literacy Trust (NLT) during the partnership. The two organisations are a good match: Blackwell’s aims to create a better educated world and the NLT aims to raise the UK’s literacy levels.

Although Blackwell’s is now known as an international academic bookseller, it began life as a small local lending library, created specifically to make books accessible to everyone.

The NLT is also celebrating an anniversary next year: the only organisation concerned with raising literacy standards for all age groups throughout the UK will be ten years old in 2004.

Blackwell’s will run a number of activities throughout their 72 stores during the year, including a sponsored bookstore crawl, sponsored reads and a swap-a-book scheme.

As well as its link to the NLT, Blackwell’s will continue working closely with schools, universities and organisations to support higher education.
