Raising funds from mobile phones

Howard Lake | 7 October 2002 | News

High street retailers might recently have teamed up with the major mobile operators to launch a mobile phone recycling scheme, but there are existing schemes which benefit charities directly.

One such scheme is run by The Mobile Phone Recycling Company which purchases and recycles redundant mobile phones. Most of the old phones are refurbished for re-use in developing countries which, says the company, aids their communication infrastructure.

Charities taking part in the company’s recycling programme can benefit from receiving funds from the proceeds of the sale of the old phones. Values vary but typically range from £2-£12 per old phone. Companies that recycle their phones through the scheme can also choose for a charity to benefit.

The initiative was set up by Clare Mckee, previously a Corporate Account Manager at Orange for 6 years. She found that she was constantly being asked by Corporate customers what they should do with their old mobiles.
