Australian fundraiser Peter Dalton has written The Key to Fundraising Success. Nick Streeter of Ace Centre Advisory Trust offers a review.

As one might expect from an Australian, Dalton’s approach is very direct and to the point, exploding myths and dishing out common-sense advice, in this no nonsense guide to fundraising success.

A short and snappy read, the book takes apart the ‘ask’ in an entertaining, straightforward, and instructive manner. The power of face to face, methods of asking and appeal planning all being covered with accompanying advice and relevant examples.

Dalton champions the personal approach throughout, and whilst I didn’t agree with everything (such as criticising the use of technology within the fundraising process) there is no doubt that many of the foundations for fundraising success are covered.

As you would expect there is a clear focus on the Australian market with some of the examples meaning little or nothing to the British fundraiser. Don’t however let this deter you as Dalton’s ‘golden nuggets’ of practical advice still shine through.

As someone relatively new to fundraising, this book has been extremely helpful in clarifying what I’ve learnt and what I need to learn. Entertaining and not too long to bore (112 pages) I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to fundraising ‘rookies’ and ‘old hands’ alike.
