Wizard opportunity
JK Rowling is now reportedly the third richest woman in Britain. The excitement surrounding the imminent launch of the Fourth Harry Potter Book is surely a fine opportunity for the right charity to secure widespread media coverage. But are any charities involved with the book’s launch or with Ms Rowling herself? At one point she used to work with Amnesty International, according to Sainsbury’s magazine.
There is one way that charities with Web sites might benefit from the book launch. By signing up as an affiliate of an online bookshop such as Amazon.co.uk, charities (or at least their trading company) can earn a percentage of all book sales generated by links on their site. Given the Fourth Harry Potter Book has been number one in Amazon.co.uk’s sales rankings for the past three weeks, there’s a good chance that visitors to virtually any type of charity’s site would be interested in buying it.
The UK Fundraising Bookshop can confirm this. As well as buying fundraising directories and guides from the site at up to 40% discount, many visitors have also bought copies of the Harry Potter books.
