35% plan to do something charitable this Christmas
More than a third (35%) of people are planning to do something charitable this Christmas, research from Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) shows.
YouGov surveyed 1,196 people for CAF online between 22 and 30 November 2021. It found that despite anxiety over the spread of Omicron and rising inflation hitting household budgets, more than a third of people (35%) last month were expecting to do something charitable this Christmas, rising to two fifths of women, and over 65s (41% and 40%).
Around one in six people (17%) will make a donation to a charity’s Christmas appeal, whilst one in 12 (8%) say they will donate to charity instead of buying a present for a friend or family member. Giving presents to a charity appeal is also popular with just over one in 10 people (12%) reporting that they will do so this Christmas.

The festive period is usually the peak time for charitable giving, and 42% of charities questioned by CAF have said that they normally see an increase in donations at Christmas time.
Commenting, Alison Taylor, Chief Executive of CAF Bank, said:
“The willingness of the British people to help one another during challenging times tells us that charitable giving is both valued and prioritised by many families in the UK. From Dickens’ A Christmas Carol right up to today, the culture of charity in all its forms has been a way in which people mark and celebrate Christmas and the festive period. We hope that people will feel inspired and rewarded by giving despite these uncertain times, and will continue to find ways to help charities well into 2022.”
In more festive giving news, this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge beat records to raise £24.1m earlier this month.
