UK’s largest online matched giving challenge to take place on Giving Tuesday
The Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s largest online matched giving campaign, will this year take place on #GivingTuesday for the first time.
This is the ninth year in which The Big Give has run its Christmas Challenge. Since 2008, when it was established by Sir Alec Reed, founder of Reed Recruitment, the annual event has raised over £71 million for more than 2,500 charity projects.
Donations to one of the 250 participating charities made during the campaign will be matched. The Big Give has found philanthropists and funders who are willing to match donations.
This year, match funding is provided by a range of philanthropic organisations, called ‘Champions’. This year, Champions include The Reed Foundation, The Childhood Trust, Candis Magazine and The Postcode Support Trust, together with “many others”.
The list of charities will be published on The Big Give’s website on 15 November. You can sign up to The Big Give’s mailing list to receive reminders about getting your donation doubled.
#GivingTuesday
The Christmas Challenge will run for just 72 hours, starting at midday on 29th November, #GivingTuesday. As such it coincides, appropriately enough, with the global day of giving and doing good.
Alex Day, Director of the Big Give, said:
“We are really excited to have partnered with #GivingTuesday for this year’s Christmas Challenge campaign. We hope that through this partnership we will inspire even more people to support a cause they are passionate about. There are a huge range of charities raising vital funds for the valuable work they do for the beneficiaries they serve and no better time to make a donation and join the national movement of giving.”

New for 2016
Based on feedback from the charities it has worked with, The Big Give is this year ring-fencing the funds for each charity. In the past the matching funds were available to any charity on a first-come first-served basis. And funds could often be matched within minutes. The Big Give expects that this year match funds will last longer.
Nevertheless, it is encouraging donors to make their donation at The Big Give as soon after 12pm on 29 November as possible.
The campaign will close at 12pm on 2 December 2016.
