Big Church Day Out gives Tearfund enough new donors to fund 1m meals

Tearfund recruited enough new monthly donors at this year’s Big Church Day Out festival to fund 1,066,530 meals for people in need.
More than 22,000 people attended the annual music festival in Sussex at the end of May, with attendees asked to pledge £5 per month by signing up to Tearfund’s Give Like Jesus campaign. Over the weekend, enough supporters signed up to the appeal to achieve Tearfund’s goal of helping to provide one million meals. Every pledge of a regular gift made at Big Church Day Out will be matched for the first 12 months up to the value of Tearfund’s target of one million meals.
Tearfund ambassador and chocolatier and pâtissier Will Torrent gave festival-goers a teff crêpe baking masterclass, learnt during a visit to Ethiopia in April to see Tearfund’s work. Before his demonstration he spoke of Amarech, a mother of seven, who he met during his visit and who had been helped by the charity.
Torrent said:

“It was incredible to see how Tearfund works through local churches to unlock people’s potential and in doing so, helps them discover new ways to help themselves. Seeing the support for Tearfund’s Give Like Jesus campaign this weekend made me realise there are thousands of generous people with a real passion to help others like Amarech.”

Give Like Jesus is also Tearfund’s first DRTV campaign, and asks people to sign up to a £5 monthly donation to help the charity provide food and assistance to those in drought-stricken Africa.
