Two new members for British Red Cross Disaster Relief Alliance
The John Lewis Partnership and Aviva are the latest companies to join the British Red Cross Disaster Relief Alliance.
The companies join existing founder member Tesco. The John Lewis Partnership’s membership follows 25 years of its support to the charity’s disaster response work, while Aviva joins the Alliance as part of its three-year partnership with the British Red Cross to share its expertise in risk management and to help raise funds.
The Disaster Relief Alliance aims to bring together companies from across the business world to provide support to vulnerable communities in the UK and overseas before crises occur. It focuses on four key areas of the charity’s work both globally and in the UK: preparedness, response, recovery and innovation.
Last year in the UK, the alliance supported communities in Kendal and Carlisle affected by the flooding caused by Storm Desmond. International emergencies also supported by the alliance last year included the Nepal earthquake, the Yemen Appeal and the Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal. The alliance has also donated funds for Red Cross resilience programmes in Sierra Leone and Bangladesh, as well as response efforts in South Sudan.
British Red Cross chief executive, Mike Adamson said:
“Over the last year the Disaster Relief Alliance has played a vital role in supporting Red Cross disaster preparedness and recovery projects around the world. Our research shows that every £1 spent on disaster preparedness saves £4 on emergency response, so for our donors, this means their funding will have a much greater impact.”
