1,000 wealthiest in The Sunday Times Rich List donated £2.66bn last year

The Sunday Times Giving List today reveals that the wealthiest 1,000 people in the UK gave £2.66 billion to charity in the previous year.
Last year saw a record number of total donations to charity of at least £1 million by those on the list: 178 of the 1,000 people in The Sunday Times Rich List, which will be published one week today, gave at least £1 million to charity.

Top donors

Sir Elton John and JK Rowling topped the list of those who had given the most. John gave £26.8 million in the past year, primarily to his Aids foundations in the UK and USA.
The Sunday Times Giving List is sponsored by the Charities Aid Foundation, itself one of Europe’s largest charitable foundations which helped people give £478 million to charities last year.
John Low, Chief Executive of CAF, said:

“Young people are the future of giving and the celebrities many people look up to can play a massive role in setting an example and showing how rewarding it is to give.
“Those on the Rich List who give to good causes provide much so more than just financial support. When stars from Coldplay and One Direction to Rory McIlroy and David Beckham give to charity, they send out an important message about the positive impact we can all have by supporting causes we care about.”
