Unused mobile data is donated as cash to UNHCR’s work in Syria

Howard Lake | 23 February 2016 | News

#Datadonate is an initiative from Swedish mobile operator Three in which leftover mobile data is turned into donations to benefit UNHCR’s work in Syria.

Swedish users choose how much of their data allowance they would like to donate, and Three donates an equivalent cash value to UNHCR.

You can donate up to 10 Swedish krona per donation, and up to five donations per month worth a total maximum of 50 SEK.

The programme is available only to individual users of Three, not business users.

Although originating in Sweden this form of giving is likely to spread. The technology behind #datadonate has been released as an open source-type solution for other mobile operators to use.
