The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) has made grants totalling over £2.4 million to 26 charities that support Naval Service personnel, veterans and their families across the UK.
The principal charity of the Royal Navy has received the largest ever number of applicants seeking financial support, increasing by 15% over the same period last year.
The charities receiving grants support sailors and Royal Marines by carrying out projects that, for example, provide emotional and financial assistance to their children and dependents. Other schemes will see older and disabled ex-Service men and women assisted with transitioning into employability after life in the Service, or help them cope with combat-related stress or physical ailments.
Grants ranged from £6,000 to £978,432.
Robert Robson, Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, said:

“The ability to distribute £2,430,280 to the veterans’ community and families is central to our vision of a world in which our sailors, marines and their families are valued and supported for life.”

Some charities have received funding from the RNRMC for the first time, including the SSAFA Norton House at Headley Court in Surrey, which provides a place to stay for families who have a loved one undergoing treatment or rehabilitation at Headley Court and SSAFA St Vincent’s, which is a residential care home for Forces veterans on the Isle of Wight.
Other beneficiaries in the latest round of funding include those who have long-standing relationships with RNRMC as a major source of their funds. This includes The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust (RNBT), which provides support to Royal Naval ratings and Royal Marines other ranks and their families, and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund (RNRMCF), which is the only charity dedicated to supporting children whose parents work, or have worked, for the Naval Service.

“The range of organisations and projects we have identified is wide. Each year we endeavour to increase our levels of support to Naval and military charities and therefore welcome applicants for our 2016 programme, which will open in September 2015.”
