Paddington™ launches Bear Miles appeal for Action Medical Research

Howard Lake | 1 August 2014 | News

Paddington Bear is launching a new appeal for Action Medical Research,  as the children’s book and TV character sets off on a tour of UK hospitals this month to visit sick children and babies.
Paddington is the mascot of Action Medical Research, and he is asking the public to support him on his travels by donating ‘Bear Miles‘. Income from the ‘Bear Miles for Breakthroughs’ will fund research to help save and change the lives of sick babies and children.
At the launch of the appeal Paddington was appropriately waved off at Paddington Station.
His tour will take him to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton on Tuesday, August 5, before visiting the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle on August 19, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge on August 27 and finally the John Radcliffe Children’s Hospital in Oxford on September 10.
Buying 10 bear miles (£10) could fund essential laboratory items such as pipettes; 15 bear miles (£15) could help fund an hour of a research nurse’s time and 38 bear miles (£38) could fund a pioneering research project for an hour.
Every person who donates to the appeal will receive an e-postcard from the bear from ‘darkest Peru’ thanking them for their generous support.

Paddington is the star of a film featuring Hugh Bonneville and Julie Walters, due out at the end of 2014.
Sarah Moss, Director of Communications at Action Medical Research, said:

“We are delighted to be taking Paddington on tour this summer to help spread the word about the life-changing work we do here at Action Medical Research. He has been at the heart of our fundraising efforts for nearly 40 years and the money raised through the ‘Bear Miles for Breakthroughs’ appeal will enable us to continue helping thousands of sick babies and children.”
