Crowdfunding site Kickstarter’s UK operation has handled £22,481,158 ($35,097,865) in its first year. Since it launched on 31 October 2012, 1,558 projects have been successfully funded via the UK site.
During that period 322,536 people have pledged to a UK project on the site. The UK was, not surprisingly, the largest source of backers (40%). However, UK projects can be funded by people from around the world. Backers from the USA and Europe were the next largest source of pledges at 26% and 21% respectively.
Overall, 60% of backers of UK projects came from outside the UK.
The UK project that received the most pledges was Elite: Dangerous, with more than £1.5 million.
In Kickstarter UK’s first 24 hours last year, 85 creative projects were added to the site.
Co-founder Yancey Strickler said: “Kickstarter’s mission is to help people bring their creative projects to life. We’re excited by what’s happened in the UK in year one, and we look forward to seeing what happens in years two, ten, and beyond. Thanks so much for being a part of it.”
