Five people have been arrested in the Midlands on suspicion of being involved in Gift Aid fraud estimated to be £450,00.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) reported that a man aged 25 and woman aged 22 were arrested in Birmingham on 23 October. On the same day a woman, aged 33, was arrested in Leicester. Yesterday two men, both aged 26, were arrested at a Birmingham police station.
HMRC did not name the charitable organisation that the alleged fraud involved.
Adrian Farley, Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation, HMRC, said: “These people have been arrested on suspicion of making fraudulent Gift Aid claims and money laundering. Anyone with information about this type of activity can contact us on 0800 788 887.”
HMRC officers have taken possession of computers and business records for further analysis.
