JustGiving expands to Asia-Pacific region

Howard Lake | 5 June 2013 | News

Online giving platform JustGiving is expanding to countries in the Asia-Pacific area. Its eight-currency service is now open to registration by charities from the UK and Ireland, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and Hong Kong.

As a result, charities in these countries can fundraise from UK citizens, and UK citizens can choose to fundraise for or donate to charities in these countries.

JustGiving, established in 2001, made its first international move to the USA where it established FirstGiving in 2003, and which is now independent. It has also set up a site for charities in Japan and charities in Holland.

In 2012, over 200,000 donations on JustGiving were made internationally, raising £12 million for UK and international causes. The sum is a small fraction of the overall amount raised on JustGiving, but overseas donations are clearly growing.

Anne-Marie Huby, Managing Director at JustGiving, said: "We already have a solid base of users outside the UK and have seen an incredible global response to high profile appeals. Many charities don’t have access to the tools available to them to maximise income from online fundraising, and in many cases aren’t aware of other fundraising alternatives that are available to them to better harness the benefits of social media and mobile giving. We’re now extending our platform to charities in markets that are naturally open to giving.”

Charities wishing to register will be required to provide documentary evidence of their charitable status.

JustGiving plans to expand further and is inviting expressions of interest from charities in other countries.
