Children’s charity Hope and Homes for Children has received a €986,290 grant from The VELUX Foundations towards its work to eradicate institutions for babies in Bulgaria.

During the next two years, with the VELUX Foundations support, Hope and Homes for Children will focus its efforts in Bulgaria on closing eight institutions for babies. The project will integrate 400 young children back into family environments and help develop alternative family-based care services.

The Bulgarian Government will use the project as a model of best practice which will be expanded and replicated on a national level.

The VELUX Foundations were created by Villum Kann Rasmussen, the founder of VELUX windows and the VKR Group. It supports non-profit projects with scientific, cultural, artistic or social objectives.

“We are extremely proud to support Hope and Homes for Children, as a respected and qualified partner in helping vulnerable children across the globe,” said Jens-Jørgen Pedersen, Senior Advisor at the VELUX Foundations.

Earlier this year Hope and Homes for Children made an emergency visit to the Pleven Institution for Babies in Bulgaria, a source of controversy in the country after it was revealed 18 neglected children had died there in as many months.

Mark Waddington, Hope and Homes for Children’s Chief Executive, said: “Our project in Bulgaria is giving the Government the expertise and confidence to roll out DI on a national scale. It wouldn’t be possible without the VELUX Foundations generous support”.
