Charity law specialist James Sinclair Taylor has been appointed as a Protector of the NESTA Trust, in the week that the former National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts was transformed into a registered charity.
A Partner and Head of the Charity and Social Business Team at Russell-Cooke Solicitors, Sinclair Taylor has extensive experience of advising charities, social enterprises and other not-for-profit organisations. He is the co-author of the Russell-Cooke Voluntary Sector Legal Handbook, and Visiting Fellow at London Southbank University.
NESTA’s mission is to “help people and organisations bring great ideas to life”. It does so by “providing investments and grants and mobilising research, networks and skills”.
As Protector, Sinclair Taylor will have a fiduciary duty to ensure the integrity of the administration of the Trust and the propriety of its procedures. The National Lottery endowment is currently valued at £321 million.
Sinclair Taylor has been appointed for a five year term and will receive £5,000 remuneration per annum and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses. He said: “This is an intriguing and unique role safeguarding a huge public investment in innovation”.
