Crisis treasure hunt event uses mobile phones

There are so many ways in which mobile phones can be used in fundraising. Here’s another one combining challenge events, competitions, celebrities, online gaming, and geo-location.
Homeless people’s charity Crisis ran a high tech treasure hunt at the weekend. ‘Mission Oxford’ took place on the streets of Oxford and London. Competitors completed tasks around famous landmarks in both cities and enjoyed a grand day out while raising funds for Crisis.
Competitors traveled from London to Oxford, and back again, guided by video instructions delivered to their smartphones by their taskmasters, journalist and Newsnight interviewer Jeremy Paxman and television presenter Anneka Rice.
Each team had pledged to raise a minimum of £750 for Crisis through sponsorship, but were competing to raise even more. There was a prize of an iPhone for each member of the team which raised the most money, donated by Everything Everywhere, the joint Orange and T-Mobile mobile phone network.
The event is the second devised for Crisis by SuperHunt, which create hi-tech treasure hunts through cities across the UK, with the help of actors, local businesses and participants’ mobile phone. The hunt was based on the game SCVNGR which lets you build custom challenges and location-based rewards.
