BT to donate 1p per call to Comic Relief on 18 February

Howard Lake | 15 February 2011 | News

British Telecom is to donate 1p to Comic Relief for every call made on a BT landline on Friday 18 February. In addition it will donate 25p for every call to BT’s Directory Enquiry Service 118500 from any landline or mobile.
The company has supported Comic Relief since 1985. This year it is sponsoring The BT Red Nose Desert Trek, in which a team of celebrities “embark on the toughest physical challenge of their lives as they attempt to cross one of the world’s most inhospitable deserts, the Kaisut in north eastern Kenya.”
The company is using Facebook to encourage people to spread the news about Chat for CHange in advance, offering boilerplate text and a profile picture for them to use:
“I’m going to call one of my friends with my best rib-tickling joke this Friday, because 18th February is Chat for Change day and BT will give 1p to Comic Relief every time someone makes a call from a BT home phone.
“Spread this message by copying it to your status and change your profile picture to the Chat for Change logo at: http://www.facebook.com/BTchatforchange ”
It is also promoting the day with a video campaign:

BT is also providing the donation line system on 0345 7 910 910 on the night, which is capable of handling hundreds of thousands of calls. BT’s eDonate system also provides a secure online back-up for Comic Relief’s website.
