Tesco donates £40,000 to support Red Cross in south east Asia
Tesco has donated £40,000 to support Red Cross Red Crescent emergency response operations across south east Asia. A committed supporter of the British Red Cross, the supermarket has donated half of this sum to the charity’s Disaster Fund, as part of its commitment to a long-term emergency response partnership.
It has donated a further £10,000 to both the Thai Red Cross and Malay Red Crescent to support emergency response activity in their respective countries.
Millions of people have been affected by severe flooding in Malaysia, Thailand and Viet Nam, and thousands more have been affected by an earthquake, tsunami and volcanic eruptions in Indonesia.
Josh Hardie, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Tesco, said: “Our partnership with the British Red Cross helps us to respond quickly and effectively in times of need. We hope that this donation will support the relief efforts in the region and build on the large amount of emergency support work already being undertaken by our businesses in Thailand and Malaysia”.
So far in 2010 the Tesco and British Red Cross emergency partnership has generated £630,000 to respond to major disasters in Haiti and Pakistan, as well as the recent support for south east Asian countries. Tesco support includes corporate donations, Clubcard appeals, customer collections, employee fundraising and donations of items from stores.
