Whizz-Kidz wins iconic children’s television Appeal

Howard Lake | 22 September 2010 | News

Whizz-Kidz, the disabled young people’s charity has been chosen as Blue Peter’s appeal charity for 2010/11.
The Blue Peter Go Cardz appeal is asking children to make Christmas cards that will be made available to buy in selected Tesco Superstores and Extra stores nationwide from 15th November 2010. This is the first time the coveted television appeal has sold a made-at-home product through a supermarket before, and is an exciting, completely new model with which to engage wider communities.
Whizz-Kidz funds vital mobility equipment – including powered wheelchairs – that allow kids to just be kids. The charity changes lives overnight as children can wheel around a playground with their friends, and feel the freedom of independence.
What are we raising money for?
The Blue Peter Go Cardz appeal aims to raise £80,000 to fund a network of 100 Whizz-Kidz clinics around the UK – helping over 400 disabled children receive an assessment and fitting for essential mobility equipment by a trained therapist.
How can YOU support the appeal?
Go tell – spread the word, go online, get networking and let all your family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues know about the Appeal.
Go make – order your free pack of Christmas card making materials TODAY! Please specify how many packs you would like: bl**************@Wh********.uk or phone 0207 233 6600. Send your cards back to Whizz-Kidz via the freepost address, no later than 18th October 2010.
Go buy – cards will be available to buy in packs of 2 for £1.20, from selected Tesco Superstores and Extra stores nationwide, subject to availability, between 15 November and 24 December 2010.
Go volunteer – we are in need of volunteers from now until December to help in our Fulfilment Centre in London; kindly donated by London Land Securities. Roles include: packing card-making materials, checking cards, and stuffing envelopes. Full training is given. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and may be CRB checked. Whizz-Kidz has worked with Tesco since being chosen as their official Charity of the Year in 2006. While the smallest charity to have won the much-prized partnership, it raised the largest amount seen by the retailer up to that year – £3.6 million. It also allowed the charity to help over 750 children in local areas by providing vital mobility equipment.

Notes to Editors
• Whizz-Kidz has changed the lives of nearly 11,000 disabled children since 1990 – often literally overnight. The charity supports young people to access the right mobility equipment – including powered wheelchairs – at the right time; and delivers wheelchair skills-training, work placements, and other life-skills to help their transition from childhood to adulthood.
• There are still over 70,000 children in the UK who need our support. Find out more and help move a life forward visit: www.whizz-kidz.org.uk
• The right wheelchair and mobility equipment is not automatically provided on the NHS, and it is virtually impossible for a disabled young person to get a powered wheelchair.
