£81m donated last year via CAF's payroll giving scheme

Last year half a million employees from over 3,000 companies across the UK donated £81 million via Charities Aid Foundation’s payroll giving scheme, Give As You Earn.
This regular tax-effective giving method is continuing to grow, albeit slowly. Ten years ago (1999-2000) GAYE generated £31 million. Currently only 44% of eligible UK employees have a workplace giving scheme.
Nevertheless, many companies match the donations made by their employees, often doubling the amount that goes to their employees’ chosen charities.
CAF, one of the UK’s largest providers of charitable trusts, has also seen this income rise by a similar amount over the last 10 years, from £47million in 1999/2000 to £143million last year. The Foundation now manages 2,807 charitable trusts on behalf of individuals who want to set aside £10,000 or more to give to charity.
John Low, Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation said: “Only 44% of UK employees on a payroll have access to a workplace giving scheme. It would be great for charities and those dependent upon them if all companies offered payroll giving and the Government could boost their Big Society plans by leading this. A survey of business leaders found that 70% would support the government introducing a universal payroll giving scheme.”
