Share your mobile volunteering ideas with Orange

Howard Lake | 10 August 2010 | News

Mobile operator Orange UK is inviting charities and developers to share practical ideas for using mobile technology “to transform volunteering in the UK”. It is seeking ideas that will “make minutes matter by introducing convenient, snack-size volunteering, so consumers can volunteer anywhere, anytime.”
It is currently “crowd-sourcing” new ideas via an online community. Ideas can be submitted, rated, and discussed by charities, developers, entrepreneurs or anyone with an interest in mobile volunteering.
The top 10 micro-volunteering actions that can be completed on the mobile will then be developed and funded by Orange UK, which has 17.3 million customers.
Later in the year Orange will open the online community to the wider public, to take part in suggesting new mobile volunteering actions and submit existing or new apps for good that they think are good. It will then choose 10 ideas for the Orange app and 10 new apps as well.
Orange say that they are not looking for any fundraising-related actions in the Orange app that they are producing. However, apps with a fundraising element can still be submitted to the topic ‘Apps doing good on the go’.
Stuart Jackson, Brand Communications Director for Orange at Everything Everywhere (which runs Orange UK and T-Mobile UK), said: “We’re taking responsibility as a company for maximising the true potential of the mobile phone – to see how it can be used to empower consumers to do acts-of-good whilst on the move”.
