Simon Community NI, a leading homelessness charity in Northern Ireland, recently received a cheque for £188,428.73 from construction company Northstone (NI) Limited.
The Northstone Group, incorporating Farrans, Northstone Materials and Cubis Industries, launched its Simon Safety Challenge in July 2007 as a way of raising money by rewarding and encouraging its workforce to undertake their duties as safely as possible.
The Safety Challenge is run on an all Ireland basis and benefits individual Simon Communities throughout the country.
In the first two years of the Challenge, Northstone have donated a total of £369,000 to the Simon Community in Northern Ireland.
The money donated from Northstone in 2008 enabled Simon Community to furnish a 15 bed temporary accommodation project.
“I have no doubt that the Simon Safety Challenge has played a significant part in the improvement in our accident frequency and severity rates over the last 3 years through the personal motivation of our people to do something to help the many homeless people in Northern Ireland,” Mark Lowry, Chief Executive of Northstone said.
