ITV has announced that four charities will benefit from the 50th anniversary year of TV show Coronation Street. The charities were chosen in a ballot by the cast. They are national charities the NSPCC and Cancer Research UK, and local charities cancer centre The Christie and Moodswings, a mental health voluntary organisation set up by the father of Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz Stape.
Kieran Roberts, Executive Producer, Coronation Street, said: “The 50th year of Coronation Street is a massive landmark in television history, and one that will be commemorated in many different ways, both on and off screen, throughout 2010. We’re delighted that support for local and UK-wide charities will form an important part of our anniversary commemorations, enabling us to use the programme’s profile to provide real support for good causes in Manchester and beyond”.
GMTV, This Morning and Granada Reports will also work with the four charities during the anniversary year.
ITV will also be creating a range of collectible retail products to help raise funds for the chosen charities.
