Motorola chooses e-Learning Foundation as Charity of Choice in UK

Howard Lake | 21 January 2010 | News

Motorola and the Motorola Foundation have announced support of the e-Learning Foundation across the UK.
Tasked with helping deprived children bridge the digital divide, the e-Learning Foundation is the only national education charity that actively campaigns to help ensure that underprivileged children have home access to online learning technologies.
Graeme Hobbs, Chairman, Motorola Ltd, commented: “Motorola is very pleased to be supporting the e-Learning Foundation. This organisation works tirelessly to make sure that the 1.5m million UK schoolchildren who do not currently have access to a computer at home get the support they need in our increasingly digital world.”
Eileen Sweeney, Director of the Motorola Foundation, added: “Education, particularly in science, technology, engineering and math, is something Motorola employees are extremely passionate about and we feel that we can contribute not just by fundraising but also by giving our time and expertise.”
In addition to supporting e-Learning through grants from the global Motorola Foundation, there are many other ways that Motorola employees will be getting involved. These include fundraisers for schools in the local communities around Motorola’s Basingstoke, Swindon and Ashburton offices, providing professional advice on wireless/IT solutions for schools as well as advising on e-safety programmes and software for school IT departments and home learning.
Valerie Thompson, Chief Executive of the e-Learning Foundation, commented: “We are really excited to have the opportunity to work with Motorola over the next three years. There are many ways in which staff can get involved in helping us overcome the digital divide in the UK, and we look forward to developing a successful and enjoyable relationship.”
The e-Learning Foundation has a number of goals which Motorola will work to support:
* To reduce the effect of the “Digital Divide” by ensuring that all children have access to the learning resources that technology can make available, when and where they need them, both at home and at school.
* To provide a free advisory and support service to help schools develop the most appropriate strategy to achieve high levels of home ICT access.
* To act as a fundraiser and grant provider to help schools develop their own sustainable sources of income.
* To actively campaign at the government level to keep the Digital Divide at the forefront of public consciousness.
