Fundraising the old-fashioned way in memory of Guy Stringer

Global capacity building charity, the Resource Alliance, will be fundraising for The Fundraisers Fund at this year’s International Fundraising Congress (IFC) on 20-23 October 2009 in Holland, in memory of former Oxfam director and Chair Emeritus of the Resource Alliance, Guy Stringer, who died in July.

Given that Guy was one of the founders of modern fundraising, Resource Alliance has decided to run this campaign using ‘retro’ fundraising techniques instead of the latest technology or new media channels. Fundraiser delegates will be encouraged to drop their spare change into a bucket and buy raffle tickets.

Alan Bird, Marketing and Communications Director of the Resource Alliance, said: “The Fundraisers Fund is all about building and strengthening the fundraising community across the world. These ‘retro’ fundraising techniques still play a key role in community fundraising and would have been so familiar to Guy Stringer, in whose memory we are fundraising.

“He was one of the most influential fundraisers and we hope that this will be an appropriate way to enable the wider fundraising community to celebrate his impact whilst growing the global fundraising community that he was so committed to.”

The Fundraisers Fund started life as the Guy Stringer Development and Bursary Fund, designed to support the professional development of some of the rising stars in fundraising in the developing world and to enable knowledge sharing on fundraising. It was re-launched with the support of The Good Agency as The Fundraisers Fund at last year’s IFC.

The Fund allows fundraisers in developed countries to give direct financial support the their colleagues in the developing world. This year it has funded 10 places at the International Fundraising Conference 2009 for fundraisers from developing countries.

A face-to-face fundraising campaign for The Fundraisers Fund will also be run at the IFC by Support Direct.
