Freemasons' Grand Charity gives £1 million to Ovarian Cancer Action

The Freemasons’ Grand Charity has made a grant of £1,000,000 to Ovarian Cancer Action. Payable over five years, the grant will be used to fund research undertaken at the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre, the only dedicated ovarian cancer research centre in Europe.
In addition it will help the charity to continue its work raising awareness of the disease, its symptoms and causes amongst women and healthcare professionals.
Grahame N. Elliott, President of The Freemasons’ Grand Charity, said: “Sadly, like other families, the lives of many Freemasons have been touched by the disease and we hope this grant will help Ovarian Cancer Action move closer towards its goal of improving women’s chances of surviving ovarian cancer.”
The grant made by the Freemasons’ Grand Charity follows a similar award given to the Institute of Cancer Research to fund research into male cancers.
Recognising the continuing popularity of this grant, the Council of the Grand Charity recommended that a similar grant be made to assist with a women’s health issue. Following consultation with the wives of Freemasons, ovarian cancer was identified as the area they wished to target.
The support given to Ovarian Cancer Action forms part of the programme of grants that The Freemason’s Grand Charity awards to non-masonic charities alongside the awards that it makes to Freemasons and their dependants and other Masonic charities.
The nearly 300-year old Freemasons’ Grand Charity is funded by Freemasons and their families. During 2006/07, the charity made grants totalling over £5.7 million.
