Leicester charity Konnect9 has created givingworldnline.com with the aim of matching businesses with surplus stock to charities that would need those items. The charity describes it as giving “access to excess”.
Launched in December 2008, the site builds on Konnect9’s record of redistributing almost £1.5 million worth of goods to 150,000 disadvantaged people over the last seven years, preventing 200 tonnes going to landfill.
The website expands the service which will always be restricted by available warehouse space
and the volume of collections and deliveries that can be made. The online presence enables the “haves and the have-nots to deal directly with one another – in a safe, secure and managed way”, according to Rama Bhalla, Giving World Online Director and founder of Konnect9.
“We live in a world of waste”, she added. “An estimated £1.37 billion worth of goods are wasted by UK businesses every year. We also live in a world of want. So why not use those mountains of surplus to plug the poverty gap – saving millions of tonnes of good stuff being dumped into landfill in the bargain? Why not hook up the supply with the demand?”
There is no charge for companies to advertise their surplus stock on the website, and charities can receive items they want free of charge.
