Running for Sailors Across the World

A Southampton-based international charity was thrilled to receive a £500 donation this week, after a runner from Canterbury completed the Great South Run on its behalf. Eddie Allen, from the marine travel company, braved the elements to raise sponsorship for the Sailors’ Society and successfully finished the 10-race in one hour and 42 minutes.
Employees of the marine travel company have been enthusiastically fundraising for the Sailors’ Society, since it was selected as the firm’s Charity of the Year. Eddie is committed to supporting the charity, and raised one of the highest amounts of sponsorship that the Society has ever received from the Great South Run. His efforts were even more impressive considering he incurred an ankle injury during training, which had threatened his fitness to compete in the event.
Talking about the experience, Eddie said: “To raise £500 in spite of the credit crunch is a demonstration of the support that my friends and family have for the Sailors’ Society. The sense of achievement upon crossing the finish line was great, especially knowing that I had raised lots of money for such a good cause. High-fiving the kids who were watching around the course, and the immense show of support from the Portsmouth public was awesome, and gave me a real boost that made me want to carry on when it got tough.”
Eddie intends to compete in more running events for the Sailors’ Society next year, and also plans to sign up for the Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle, a sponsored bike ride which will take place on 10th May 2009 in Southampton.
