The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has opened an application round to its Refugee and Asylum Seekers Initiative. Grants are available to organisations throughout the UK that provide local support and advocacy for young refugees and asylum seekers.

Application is open to any charity or not for profit organisation working with children and young people aged under 21 who are refugees or seeking asylum. The main objective of the Refugee and Asylum Seekers Initiative is to change legislation and policy to meet international standards on children’s rights.

The objective of this specific application round is to provide support to community organisations providing direct services and advocating on behalf of children and young people seeking asylum in the following areas:

• Detention;
• Destitution;
• Enabling access to services such as healthcare, legal provision, housing and education;
• Providing support to unaccompanied children.

The purpose of the funding round is to equip such organisations so that they can better perform their advocacy role. Grants will not be available until February 2009 and all money must be spent by end of December 2012.

How to apply

There is a two-stage application process. The initial stage is a brief application form and should you be invited to move to the next stage you will be asked for more details then. The first-stage closing date is 12 September and you should hear the results by mid-October 2008. The second-stage application process closes on 12 December 2008 and grants will be available from February 2009.
